10th Completed Texas Sport Displays at AirVenture Oshkosh 2009

Although I’ve been to AirVenture Oshkosh several times—the first being in 1999—I only recently entertained the idea of building my own airplane. This year marked my tenth anniversary, and this time I brought my own airplane.

I decided to enroll in the factory's KwikBild program to ease any worries about getting the aircraft completed in a reasonable amount of time. Working at the factory was a tremendous benefit. I can’t imagine how long it would have taken had I done this at home, in my spare time.

Even while away from the factory I was always thinking about my airplane. Prior to starting, I was provided a fully illustrated build manual and this enabled me to plan each next phase of the project. It also helped me to prepare myself for learning some new hands-on skills. Though the weeks spent at American Legend on the build project were quite intense, time passed quickly. Time away was spent studying and shopping. There were so many choices among powerplant, instruments, avionics, accessories, and other equipment. It was a shopping excursion that was to have many meaningful outcomes. The experience was overwhelming, yet fun. I am very, very pleased with the finished aircraft and thoroughly enjoyed flying it to Oshkosh along with my 16-year-old son in the covey of Cubs!

Captain Cookie's Cub

To all,

Captain Cookie's Cub went to the Antique Aircraft Association's Cactus Fly-In held at Casa Grande last weekend and she came away a winner! In and about the twenty or so modern homebuilts was my Cub and a half scale replica of the Storch, an observation plane used by the Germans in WWII. The crowds formed around our two aircraft, paying little attention to the modern ones. CC'sC got 1st Place Experimental (homebuilt) and the Storch got the People's Choice award.

Spent the two days answering questions about building the Cub, showing off it's great short field takeoff ability, and doing a bit of volunteer work for the fly in. I've always been impressed with the Legend Cub but never really thought it to be a real show plane or crowd pleaser but I guess it is. I'm now absolutely shameless in accepting and enjoying compliments about CC'sC but then, for what it cost, I should deserve some enjoyment from it. Actually I've more than got my money's worth from it already.

My buddy Ed Hickert showed up to check out the Antiques and my Cub. Ed took the pics of me when I went out and demonstrated the short field capabilities of CC'sC.

Lots and lots of beautiful old airplanes and beautiful flying weather!

Stew Bloemer, Texas Sport builder, Pheonix, AZ

My uncle (Stew Bloemer) is obviously very happy with and proud of his Legend Cub. He has turned flying and enjoying this airplane into a full time job! I am fortunate because he does let me fly it occasionally. However, it is rarely in the hanger or on the ground because he is determined to fly this airplane until the paint peels off it!

Could you please do me a favor? Will you talk him into buying another one? I would really appreciate that. Thank you.

Stew really enjoys flying his Legend Cub around Arizona and showing it off every chance he gets. This has been a fantastic hobby and distraction for him. He is positively a happy owner and is definitely doing more than his share of word of mouth advertising!

Sincerely,
Todd Ameis

P.S. Don't for get my request!

"It Flew Beautifully"

We received the kit January 7, 2008, which coincidentally was my 62nd birthday. TX-012 was completed in August 2008. The decision to build a Texas Sport Cub was all about the building experience. My friends and I are always doing a project that involves something mechanical. We all fly model airplanes and model helicopters that are quite complex including model jets that can exceed 200 mph. The Texas Sport Cub was prefabricated enough and the kit was complete enough that it looked like something that could be built in a reasonable amount of time so we wouldn't get bored or lose interest before it was finished.

The Cub was my first airplane build other than ultralights, but I have worked on airplanes in the past. I had two friends, Lynn Morgan and Howard Kendal, which helped with the construction. The build was very straightforward and the only new skill required was the covering and painting. The covering turned out to be easy to master and the painting took more hours than I thought to achieve the finish I wanted. We built a temporary paint booth out of a 10' x 20' party tent and a blue tarp in my hobby room to do the painting. The hobby room is at the rear of my company offices.

I received my Private license in 1973 but I had not been actively flying for 20 years. My only prior Cub experience was a few flights in my father-in-law's J-3 many years ago. I flew a Citabria this summer to get current. My partner in the Texas Sport Cub, Marshall Macfarlane, is much more experienced and currently owns a Tiger Moth. He has owned a Christen Eagle and a Classic Waco in the past. The appeal of the Texas Sport Cub to him were the great flying qualities and the ability to extend the flying season compared to an open cockpit biplane when you are located in Michigan.

Marshall did the first flight and all he said was "it flies great; it is easy to fly, go fly it!" I flew the second flight and it flew beautifully. It was in perfect rig and handled well. TX-012 now has over 25 hours and we love it!

A little over six months for the build isn't bad when you consider that I still worked at my job and had a few vacations interspersed.

1st Texas Sport Customer Flies Cross Country TX-FL-CA

The trip was amazing... I just counted the hours, from SLR to PAO took 43 hours block to block, 23 hours in the air, most on the deck. I had several people wave, saw elk and lots of deer, surprised a few hawks and plenty of vultures (they don't seem to want to make the big sacrifice to feed their families). Most cars were passing me (until I cut the corners), several trains did as well. Over the Mojave I think a jogger did! Not quite, but 25 miles put of Daggett I showed one hour to go on the GPS.

I'd recommend it anyone!

Sorry for the long email, but I'm sitting in an airport with refreshements in hand!

Cheers, Rand

"The Experience Of A Lifetime"

I had always wanted to build a plane. Even when I was building flying models as a boy, the thought of one day building a real plane was always in the back of my mind. However, at first school and then later a career and raising a family always came first.

Now, with my kids grown and living their own lives, the dreams came back. I mentioned to my family in passing that I was thinking about building a plane next year. Their response surprised me. My wife said, "Go for it," and my boys said, "Why wait till next year!"

A Cub was a natural choice. I had learned to fly in a Cub and had a lot of fun flying them on wheels and skis before I went into the Air Force. The Texas Sport KwikBild program was perfect for me. I was unwilling to sacrifice family time for the many months, or even years, required to build the average kit. A few weeks at a time I could handle, especially when I was able to schedule around family plans. The KwikBild program at Sulphur Springs was one of the best decisions of my life, and without a doubt the best way to build a plane.

Being able to totally concentrate on the project was invaluable. No constant interruptions, no calls, none of the inevitable distractions that always seem to occur when you start something. Having expert help available saves an amazing amount of time. They know all of the mistakes you can make from years of personal experience. Nothing like instant credibility!

It was an absolutely wonderful opportunity to bond with my two sons. We had worked on cars together as they were growing up, but extended time together became rare since they had grown up and left home. The days we spent together provided me with a lifetime of cherished memories. They came from both ends of the country to help me build a plane. I am so proud of them. While neither are pilots, as a result of our experience, both have started to work on their Sport Pilot rating. In fact, we are already planning to build another Cub next year.

It was really fun being around the Texas Sport folks. They all truly love what they are doing, and take tremendous pride in their work Their enthusiasm about building planes is contagious. Just imagine, nothing to do all day but talk about and build planes.

I can't say enough about the great support and encouragement we received from the entire staff at Texas Sport and American Legend. The whole atmosphere was great. It was like friends helping friends learn new skills. There was a constant emphasis on safety and doing quality work.

Finally, there is no way to adequately describe the feeling of seeing all the pieces come together and start looking like a real plane. It is only exceeded by the sound of the first engine start and the joy felt on the first takeoff. Looking out the window at a plane you built as the sun starts to set is pure joy. Besides, how often do you get an opportunity to fly a brand new plane for the first time? Possibly never!

This was truly the experience of a lifetime. My feet still haven't touched the ground. The only downside was that my boys were really disappointed in being unable to witness the first flight. We'll fix that next year!
